Almost every home-built CNC table will have certain similarities. Among those similarities are a rectangular table, two rails of some sort running the length of that table, a gantry sitting on those two rails. The gantry might be thought of as the first moving part. The gantry is typically turned up on one edge thereby occupying the least amount of space on the long rails and providing for optimal range of motion. These home-built units are usually powered by 3 motors connected to screws. The screw is threaded through the gantry or the trolley or the spindle. When the screw turns it moves the axis.
This is how most home-built CNCs look. And there’s a good reason for it. Image borrowed from www.damencnc
